Backup your wordpress blog and upgrade to wordpress 2.3.2

Do you have a self hosted wordpress blog? Do you carry out backups? This article is on why,how and how often to backup your wordpress blogs?

Why should you backup your wordpress blog and MySql database?

This will definitely help you to restore your blog, in the eventuality of any serious crash. It will also help in smooth effortless transitions from one webhost to another,if needed. You can use the backups to simulate your wordpress blog on your desktop and keep it in sync. with your online version.

How often should you backup your wordpress blog?

Back up your blog – themes(including images and javascripts, and may be your plugins) once. Then, whenever you change the theme, or upgrade wordpress, backup your blog again.Webhosts quite often provide a FTP software similar to FileZilla or CuteFTP to accomplish blog backups.

Backing up your MySql database – This is more important than the first step, as the mySql database contains all your posts and comments. How often, depends on your posting frequency. If you make too many posts, do it on a weekly basis. At a minimum, monthly backups of mySql database, are better all self hosted wordpress blogs. These are apart from post backups you can do in your mailboxes, by sending your posts via email.

Webhosts also quite oftem provide a phpMyAdmin interface through which you can accomplish the backups. This is quite an user friendly interface. If needed, you can bokmark this wordpress backup guide

There are a few wordpress plugins that can help, but i prefer the phpMyAdmin interface.

Have these backups stored in mutiple drives,PCs and CDs.

Recently I upgraded wordpress to version 2.3.2 and it was time to carry out backups. This version was a security release to fix:

WordPress bug that reveals draft posts:

This version is to fix some serious bugs including the one that reveals a wordpress blog’s draft posts to the world. There are a few blogs that exposed this vulnerability. But some wordpress bloggers say the leak happens on blogs that do not use search engine friendly URLs,which is turned off by default.

Create a custom DB error page for your wordpress blog:

Also wordpress 2.3.2 release will let you create a custom DB error page, by placing a custom template at wp-content/db-error.php.This custom page is thrown when there are MySQL DB errors, instead of the default error message.Wordpress 2.3.1 users can upgrade by only replacing the relevant PHP files.Download them from wordpress and replace them.Have a look at the summary of changes before you upgrade.
