Domain name – How did I choose Techblissonline dot com?

By Techblissonline Staff Updated on 23rd May 2013 Filed Under: Blogging Tips, Wordpress SEO & Plugins

Choosing and buying an appropriate domain name is very vital for any online business. This holds good for bloggers as well.

Should I be using a .com extension or any other extension like .net or .org etc.?

First, one should decide whether he wants a domain name with extensions like .com or .net or .org or a domain name with country specific extensions like .us or .in or .de etc. I did not want this blog to be country specific and preferred an international audience for this blog. But if you do business that primarily caters to your local population, then a country specific extension for your domain name, would be more appropriate and beneficial as well.

But most people in the world would search for a website, by editing a .com ending domain name in their browsers.Other extensions are used less frequently.A popular tech blog on google’s blogger platform,”Digital Inspirations”, had recently moved to wordpress platform. The url for the wordpress blog is labnol.org while labnol.com was already taken by some other buyer. This is an obvious disadvantage for labnol.org, as they would loose traffic to labnol.com.People looking for the blog are more likely to edit labnol.com in their browsers. The author of the blog,Amit Agarwal, however had a good strategy for migrating from blogger to wordpress and he has done everything possible to prevent loss of audience to his site.Amit is infact seeing a growth in the number of subscribers, but this can be attributed to wordpress platform and the custom domain name.He is still at a loss with that .org extension.People rarely look for a .org ending website and many also consider .org to be an extension associated with non-profit organizations. But Amit could do nothing about it, as someone else have already registered the .com extension. So I wanted a .com domain name for this blog and nothing else.

Should I be using a hyphenated or non-hyphenated domain name?

The next decision, that i had to make, was the toughest part and it was the actual name for my domain. Some bloggers prefer their personal names while others prefer a keyword based domain name for SEO benefits. As I chose the tech niche for this blog, I preferred a name that suggested the primary objective of the blog. You will often hear that most tech based domain names are already registered/taken.This makes the task of choosing a domain name in the technology niche, even more arduous.Hence, many bloggers often resort to hyphenated names. But there is one good SEO advantage in hyphenated names. Most search engines would be able to identify keywords in your domain name,if they are separated by hyphens. Thus there will be obvious SEO benefits, if you could stuff your keywords in an hyphenated domain name. But then, most people would search for non hyphenated website names first, rather than hyphenated names.I preferred a non hyphenated name for this blog.

Should I be using a longer or shorter domain name?

It is always better, if the domain name is shorter.Shorter domain names are always easier to remember and easier to type.Even while using a shorter domain name,it should be comprising of simple word/words in the primary language of the blog.

How did i choose my domain name?

Though most tech based domain names are taken already,i knew that I could still find a decent name,if I spent some quality time working on it.I headed to the world’s most popular domain name registrar godaddy.com and worked on getting a domain name in the technology niche.I did numerous searches before I could find this name “Techblissonline” available.I immediately registered it without any procrastination. To register the domain name,I created an account with godaddy.com and buying was easier and cheaper there. The domain name “Techblissonline.com” was not very lengthy too.It actually meant “Tech happiness online”.I always wanted my readers to be happy and hence, I was happy and satisfied in choosing this domain name. However I did not make “Tech happiness online” as my tag line.I preferred a keyword based tag line.I also preferred to have the site name as Techblissonline Dot Com as it would make remembering the url of the blog easier.

Hope my experiences would serve as good tips or hints on how to choose a domain name and register.

I also moved about two months back to WP. WP is really wonderful, specially for those, who migrate from blogger.

    One advice here.
People avoid filing one post in more than one categories. It is not good from SEO point of view, because it appears as duplicate content to SEs.

May be you find it worth considering.

  4. Hey silki, thanks for the welcome…but i do exclude serps from categories , tags, archives etc. using robots.txt and my sitemap…

infact if you don’t do that, then you are duplicating, even if you use one category or tag….
