Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a software to remotely connect to a PC in another location. UltraVNC is a free remote helpdesk software that makes it possible to view and interact with a computer from any other computer or device, via internet or intranet.

VNC Viewer and VNC Server:

VNC is similar to Windows’ Remote Desktop but it lets you connect to a computer running any other OS including Linux, Unix, etc.VNC transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying the graphical screen updates back in the other direction, over a network. A VNC system consists of a client, a server, and a communication protocol.

• VNC server – This is the program that runs on the PC/computer that shares its screen
• VNC Viewer(VNC client) – This is a software runing on a client PC, that watches and interacts with the server
• VNC protocol (RFB) – This is very a simple protocol, based on one graphic primitive from server to client and event messages from client to server

VNC is also platform-independent i.e. a VNC viewer on one operating system may connect to a VNC server on the same or any other operating system. There are clients and servers for many GUI-based operating systems and for Java. Multiple clients may connect to a VNC server at the same time. Popular uses for this technology include remote technical support and accessing files on one’s work computer from one’s home computer, or vice versa.PC support personnel usually provide technical support by running a VNC Viewer and connecting to a remote PC that runs the VNC server.

VNC by default uses TCP ports 5900 through 5906, each port corresponding to a separate screen (:0 to :6).Using VNC over the Internet works well if bot the client and server machines have a broadband connection. However, it may require advanced NAT, firewall and router configuration such as port forwarding in order for the connection to go through.

UltraVNC SC is a mini (166k) UltraVNC Server that can be customized and preconfigured for download by a Customer. UltraVNC SC does not require installation and does not make use of the registry. The customer only have to download the little executable and Click to make a connection. The connection is initiated by the server, to allow easy access thru customers firewall.

From a security perspective, UltraVNC supports the use of an open-source encryption plugin which encrypts the entire VNC session including password authentication and data transfer. It also allows authentication to be performed based on NTLM and Active Directory user accounts. However, use of such encryption plugins make it incompatible with other VNC programs.
