well I looked it up and apparently you can’t have passwords on certain Vista ’s I have th home premium and it doesn’t allow me to do it. you can check by clicking the help and support butten under start and search for “password protect” then the 1st couple options will tell you if you can or can’t with your version, hope it helps.

Which version of windows are you using? Did you check the Action menu option.for example in windows 2000, the add password option can be found on opening the zip file and clicking Action menu item.The password protection will then apply to all subsequent files that you add to the compressed zip folder.

still even after following ur procedure im still not able to lock my zip file after selecting the file den compressing till there everythign is fine but after that if i explore the file i dont get the password option in my file menu.. Pls let me how should do it.. ur quick response will be apriciated

there is possibility to compress file(s) from command line :
zip -9 -q c:\test.zip “c:\test.txt”

do u know how add password from command line ?

Hey nice tip , I never knew we can add password protection using default window add to zip folder option . Always used to use winrar for this . great tip . BTW there is a typo, “This will create a new compressed folder with the same name as the file but without the extension .zip.” , i think it must be “with” the extension zip rather than without.
