Though AVG calls it as “AVG Rescue CD”, it can be used to create either a bootable CD or DVD or USB flash disk. It is available for free download as an ISO file which can be used to burn a CD or DVD and also as zip or RAR archive which can be used to create the bootable USB device.

Creating a bootable antivirus USB disk for Windows

If you have a USB drive on the computer, you may also create a bootable antivirus USB disk for Windows. To create one, insert a USB device (flash disk) into any one of the USB drives on your computer. Then, download either the RAR archive or the ZIP archive to the computer. After downloading one of the archive files, extract the content to any folder in your computer. Find and double click the file named “setup.exe“. This installer will then assist you in creating a bootable USB rescue disk for windows. On completion, a message will confirm the creation of the disk.

It is important to remember that you shall double click and run “setup.exe” and not the “makeboot.bat” file from the extracted folder on your PC. If you mistakenly run “makeboot.bat” from the hard drive, the boot record on the computer will be overwritten and the PC will become un-bootable.

How to boot the computer with AVG antivirus boot disk and clean viruses and malware?

The bootable AVG rescue disk that you created above is nothing but a CD or DVD or USB disk, as the case may be, with Linux OS and AVG pre-installed on it.

  • 1. After burning the “AVG rescue CD” ISO image to a CD (or DVD) or creating a bootable USB rescue disk, as the case may be, set your PC to boot from either the CD drive (or DVD drive) or USB disk. You can do this through BIOS settings.Insert the bootable CD or DVD into the appropriate drives of the infected computer and start the PC. If you had created a USB disk, insert it into the USB drive of the infected computer and start it.
  • 2. During the system start up, AVG rescue disk will display a welcome screen. You can continue to proceed by pressing “ENTER” on the keyboard. If you like to set additional parameters like the screen resolution and other boot options, press “F1″ instead of “ENTER” and set those parameters. Then, press “Enter”.
  • 3. On pressing “ENTER”, the bootable antivirus AVG rescue disk will automatically mount all the hard drives of the computer. You will then be prompted to update AVG files and it is highly recommended to update the files. To update AVG, you need to be connected to the internet. If you aren’t able to connect to the internet, you may download the AVG updates to another computer and load them to a USB flash disk. You can then insert this flask disk into another USB drive on the infected computer and use the “Mount” option in the menu to be able to access it. You can then use the “Update” option in the menu and select “update from Directory” to select the flask disk and update AVG files from that disk.
  • 4. After the update is completed, you will be presented with an interface from where you can scan your hard drives for viruses and other malware. To navigate between the options, use the arrow keys and press “Enter” to select the option.

You may also choose “Exit” to exit the AVG Rescue CD interface and return to the console.
