SyncToy – a Windows Vista or XP, free synchronization software or PowerToy

 January 28, 2008 One Comment

SyncToy v2.0 is a free synchronization software (powertoy) to easily synchronize files or to synchronize folders, between any different locations(folders, drives, etc.) in windows (XP, vista, etc.).SyncToy is one of the free power toys that lets you move, copy, rename and delete files between different windows folders or directories and computers, through an user friendly graphical user interface (GUI).

You can synchronize any kind of file including pictures or images, audio, music, videos, documents etc. between source and destination.Sometimes synchronizing files between different hard disks will help provide an excellent backup or RAID alternative.

Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality.

Thus SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows Vista or XP, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories

How does SyncToy work?

SyncToy, a free sync powertoy for Windows XP or windows vista, will require you to create pairs of folders – “folder pair” that represents the folders whose content need to be synchronized. These folders can on the same drive or one folder can be on the local drive while the other folder is on an external device such as a mapped network drive or a network share from another computer or a USB flash drive or a portable hard disk or a Flash memory card or a memory stick etc.

Most importantly, SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time and each set can be configured with different rules or actions for synchronization.

However SyncToy would not synchronize automatically, whenever there is any change detected. This can be overcome by scheduling SyncToy to run automatically using Task Scheduler.

Download SyncToy v2.0. SyncToy also requires Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0. SyncToy 2.0 is the last stable version release for SyncToy for Windows XP and Vista.
