Avast Antivirus 6.0 – Review of Auto Sandbox

avast Free Antivirus Edition is already popular for its features and it ranks as one of our best free antivirus software picks for windows 7, XP and vista. While avast free antivirus 5 provided a number of shields to guard your computer from all kinds of threats like viruses, malware, root-kits and spyware, avast 6.0 improves it further and provides Auto Sandbox, a new virtualized environment to run any suspicious applications.

Avast Antivirus Review

Whenever you run any new application and avast identifies it to be new and suspicious, it will prompt users to run the application in a sandbox. Once users chooses to run the application in avast’s virtualized environment, the antivirus will scan it for threats and if it finds the application’s code to be dangerous or malicious, it will shut down the virtual computer, thereby ensuring the user’s real machine remains safe.

If the application is safe, you can continue to run it in the sandbox, without the hassle of false positives that you frequently encounter with other antivirus software. Avast 6.0 thus becomes one of the first free antivirus software to provide this new virtualization technology as part of avast free edition.

Virtualization significantly increases the safety of computers, and auto sandbox in avast 6.0 is a significant new feature that makes this antivirus even more robust.

Currently, auto sandbox in avast 6.0 provides users with three options.

  • execute the file within the virtual Auto Sandbox or
  • run it outside the sandbox or
  • cancel running the application entirely.

It is however best to choose the option to execute the file within the virtual auto sandbox, if you use any new software in your computer, to ensure virus protection.

It will be good if avast could add an option to move the executable file to chest, if it is found to be malicious. Right now, avast 6 simply shuts down the virtual computer and doesn’t provide an option to delete the malicious executable file or move it to chest.
