When a web page is shared on facebook, it should have the appropriate open Graph tags for it to be optimized with Titles, Descriptions and appropriate rich content like images, videos and audio for Facebook users. This would inturn enhance CTR (Click-through Rates) and drive more traffic to the shared web page.
Techblissonline Platinum SEO makes WordPress SEO easy for everyone and it supports optimizing your WordPress content by enabling addition of appropriate open Graph Tags for Title, Description and Image that could be read by Facebook Crawlers. these can be specified via the Basic Social Tab of the Techblissonline Platinum SEO MetaBox for every single post, page or taxonomy. In the absense of these Open Graph Tags, FaceBook uses heuristics to make the best guess for these elements. Thus the plugin lets you specify socially optimized Titles, Descriptions and the best image that should be shown to Facebook users for enhancing CTR and thereby driving in more traffic to the web page and the website in general.
What are the most commonly used Open Graph Tags?
The following are some of the most commonly used Open Graph Tags and you must ensure that these are added to your content by following best practices listed below for each one of them.
og:url – The canonical URL for your wordPress Post or page. This should ideally be Pretty URLs, without session variables, user identifying parameters, or counters. Likes and Shares for this URL will aggregate at this URL. For example, mobile domain URLs should point to the desktop version of the URL as the canonical URL to aggregate Likes and Shares across different versions of the page.
og:title – The title of your wordPress Post or Page Content or Taxonomy (Usually the Term Name) Content. It is ideal to not add your branding like Site Name as you would normally do for SEO. This isn’t necessary as Facebook automatically adds the brand name and/or site name by reading the relevant Open Graph Tags added the plugin.
og:description – A brief description of the shared content, usually between 2 and 4 sentences. This will be displayed below the title of the post on Facebook. Make sure that it is written in a way that briefly conveys what the content is about and makes your Facebook followers or Community and/or other users to click through and read and engage.
og:image – The URL of the image, that should appear on Facebook, when someone shares your WordPress Post or Page content on the social platform. To update an image for the shared content, after it’s been published on facebook, you must use a new URL for the new image against tihs Open Graph tag. Images are cached by Facebook based on the URL and it wouldn’t be updated unless the URL changes. See below for more info, and check out our best practices guide to learn how to specify a high quality preview image.
fb:app_id – Every Website that intends to drive traffic from social sites like Facebook and obtain an APP ID from the social platform via the APP dashboard.. This should be added as an Open Graph tag to every WordPress Post or Page in order to use Facebook Insights that lets you view analytics for traffic to your site from Facebook.
og:type – This open graph tag is used to specify the type of media of the content. This tag impacts how the content shows up in facebook News Feeds. In the absense of this tag,Facebook defaults the type to website. Each URL should be a single object, so multiple og:type values are not possible for the same URL. Individual Posts or Pages should be tagged as Article object type, in the case of a blog. Techblissonline Platinum WordPress Premium supports several Facebook Object types that could be specified against wordPress Post or Page URLs, depending on the content.
og:locale – The locale of the shared content. This defaults to en_US. All the supported Facebook locales are listed here. You can also use og:locale:alternate to specify other available language translations, if any.
