Bloggers usually wonder whether they should be writing lengthy posts or short posts and often try to find answers for how long or how short a blog post should be? Long vs short posts have been discussed in the blogosphere, for a long time now.Though a few have addressed this question, I have a different solution for having both long and short posts.
What should be the ideal length of my blog posts?
Blogs on different niches call for a variety of post lengths. For eg: a celebrity blogger may satisfy his readers with just one image or one video per post. These are then optimized for search engines with appropriate alt and title tags.It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. There are celebrity bloggers like Perez Hilton, who has become a celebrity blogger, with these kind of celebrity posts.
On the other hand, a blog on technology or programming should have posts that are as long or as short to cover the topic that it discusses. If there are enough content, then it would be a good idea to split them into a series of posts and hyperlink them rather than having one comprehensive post.Having a series of posts would be beneficial from a SEO (search engine optimization) perspective as you would would have well interlinked, focused posts on your blog.
But ensure that you make every post in the series interesting, with good examples that are supplemented by well optimized images. This not only makes them nice reads but also provides an opportunity to drive traffic from image search engines as well. Also make sure that you don’t frustrate your readers with incomplete posts. Each post of the series has to be long enough to sustain the title under which it is written.
Optimize post length for search engines:
Just like you optimize post title and drive traffic from both search engines and social media (including subscribers), the blog posts’ length should be optimized, based on traffic trends and readers’ interests.Visitors via search engines are those who are looking at solutions/answers for their queries. So even if you write a series of posts, make sure that every post is optimized and targeted for specific (as few as possible) keywords.
Optimize post length for social media visitors and regular readers:
Visitors from social media or your regular readers (subscribers)will normally have a shorter attention span.Comprehensive posts may not be to their tastes, either.Hence short summary posts, pointing to relevant and appropriate links or a series of posts, that are well interspersed, may be a good idea to keep them interested.A series has the disadvantage of getting you indulged on one aspect of your niche for a prolonged period and thereby frustrating your readers interested in a wider array of topics.Interspersing helps in overcoming this negativity of a series.
Optimize post length for every visitor:
It is also possible to have posts with in-depth coverage and a summary post with short overviews that are linked to those posts.A summary post is one that has a few lines of content with appropriate links. These summary posts may be targeted for visitors from social media while the keyword optimized in-depth posts attract the search engine traffic.
If a study of your regular readers suggest that they prefer such summary posts, then you could even consider excluding your in depth posts from appearing in feeds. This way, you could still make search engine friendly, keyword optimized, in-depth posts without frustrating your feed readers (subscribers).Stealth publish plugin will let you prevent posts from being featured on the front page or in feeds.
Analyze your visitors and decide upon an ideal strategy to build content and keep driving traffic from multiple sources.
