Secure your wordpress blog by connecting using SFTP/FTPS client

Use Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)/FTPS client to connect to your wordpress blog server, instead of File Transfer protocol (FTP) client.Thereby secure your wordpress site from hackers/intruders. Earlier we talked about how to prevent directory listing in wordpress. Now let us see why SFTP/FTPS client is secure and better than FTP client.

When you use an FTP client, passwords used to connect to the web host (server), on which your wordpress blog is hosted, are sent in plain, human readable text.Hackers, who are listening on your network, can easily intercept the information and gain access to your site via FTP.FTP is an old standard and hacker prone.User names, passwords, FTP commands and transferred files can be “sniffed” or viewed by anyone on the same network, using a packet sniffer.Hence one must use a client that supports SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) (also called FTP over SSH) or FTPS (FTP over SSL) that adds SSL (Secured socket layer)/TLS encryption to FTP.When you use a desktop client like, say filezilla to connect to your wordpress server, use FTPS/SFTP. If your web host does not support SFTP/FTPS, or if they put restrictions to switch it on, consider changing your web host.

SSH or Secure Shell is a network protocol designed to replace TELNET and other insecure remote shells, that send information like passwords in plain text mode.SSH (secure shell), on the other hand, allows data to be exchanged using a secure channel between two networked devices.Information exchanged over the secure channel is encrypted.

  1. Do we need to be so careful? What if somebody does get access to my blog password…it is unlikely they will be motivated to sit and ghost write some articles for me…if someone will do it then I am happy to give them my password anyway!

  2. i liked the joke…it depends on how passionate you are and what platform you use…if you are on blogspot, you don’t have these worries other than having a strong password… 🙂
