Troubleshoot Gmail SMTP Server Connection

Do you have issues in connecting to Gmail SMTP Server though using the proper Gmail SMTP Settings? The first step to address this issue is to ensure SSL is active or enabled for SMTP in your mail client. Then, make sure that allow authentication is enabled for the SMTP server in your mail client. If you find that both “SSL” and “allow authentication” are enabled for the SMTP server, you may proceed to test Gmail SMTP Server connection by maiking Telnet pings as explained below.

How to test Gmail SMTP Server connection?

Since both “SSL” and “allow authentication” are enabled, yet sending mails through Gmail SMTP server does not work as it should, the next logical step to troubleshoot the connection is by carrying out a telnet test as described below.

If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista on your computer, you must enable “Telnet client” prior to carrying out the Telnet test. The following are the steps to enable “Telnet client” in windows 7 and Vista.

  • Click the Start Orb –> Control Panel –> Programs.
  • Under ‘Programs and Features”, Select “Turn Windows Features On or Off”.
  • In windows 7 and vista, you may be prompted for an administrator password or confirmation. When prompted by the UAC dialog, provide the appropriate confirmation.
  • In the resulting window titled “Windows Features”, select the check box labeled “Telnet Client”, and click OK. Windows will turn on this feature after a few minutes.

After turning on “Telnet client” for windows, run the following telnet test to connect to Gmail SMTP Server.

Telnet Test on Windows 7 vista and XP:

  • In XP, click Start –> Run and on Windows 7 and Vista click the Start Orb.
  • In XP, enter “telnet 465” against text box labeled “Open:” and click “OK”. In windows 7 and vista, enter it against the text box labeled “Search programs and files” and click OK. If you are using Outlook 2007, enter “telnet 587” and click “OK”.

Telnet test on Mac:

Here is how you can carry out the Telnet test on Mac.

  • click the “Macintosh Hard Drive” icon, and open the “Applications” folder.
  • Open “Utilities” and select “Terminal”.
  • Depending on the port you use to send emails, type “telnet 25” or “telnet 587” in the prompt window and press Enter on the keyboard.

When doing the Telnet test on windows or Mac, if the prompt window clears without throwing any errors, the Telnet test has passed.If you receive an error message, then access to Gmail SMTP Server has been blocked by your local network administrator or Internet Service Provider.
